During the Civil War more than 600, 000 lives suffered in the prison camp. Nearly 410,000 soldiers .

Twenty five percent of the prisoners died in that camp. By the end of the war 2,963 Elmira prisoners were dead.

With so much Disease, overcrowding, and natural disaster, 12,123 of the 2,963 died in all. from disease.

In Illinois camp Douglas Prison camp was named after Stephen Douglas. When senator Douglas Died in June 1861 the prison camp was built on the land that he had owned.

The Civil War was in its third year in the summer of 1864 the Federal Government converted Camp number 3, which also was known as Camp Rathbun, into a prison camp for captured Confederate Soldiers.

The prison camp was 30 acres surrounded by a twelve foot wall with a ramp near its top. Every hundred feet there was a guard shelter to protect them from the weather. The main gate was located just east of where Foster Avenue now meets Water Street.

Confederate Prisoners. On July 6th 1864 African Americans marched from Earie Station to Prison Camp. There were 12,123 prisoners in the camp.
